2010 Events at The Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park

The Savill Garden, and The Royal Landscape in Windsor Great Park, has a fantastic and varied programme of events for visitors throughout 2010. Highlights include Spring Gardens Week (17-21 May); and the Celebration of the Rose (21-27 June) which follows on from the opening of the new Rose Garden. Look out for holiday activities, music, theatre and fun!

Easter (3-5 April) provides the opportunity for families to enjoy the new Treasure Trail around Cow Pond, Chapel Wood, Smith’s Lawn and Obelisk Ride. There are two trails – one which takes 40 minutes to an hour for younger children and then the second trail takes 2 hours to complete. The cost to enter is £2.50 per trail and there is a treat for all participants. The trail leaflet can be picked up from The Savill Building.

The ever popular Specialist Plant Fair will be held on Saturday 8 May 10am to 5pm. British growers will be offering specialist and rare varieties of plants. The prestigious nurseries, many of whom exhibit at Chelsea and Hampton Court, will have a wide range of plants not widely available elsewhere. There is free admission to the Plant Fair which is held in The Savill Garden car park (normal car park charges apply).

Internationally famous for their spring display, The Royal Landscape’s Valley Gardens and The Savill Garden are stunning in May and this will be celebrated in Spring Gardens Week (17-21 May). The famous collection of the Kurume Azaleas in the Valley Gardens Punch Bowl will be coming to their peak in Spring Gardens Week and visitors will be able to enjoy stunning rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias and The Savill Garden’s Spring Wood. There will also be a special programme of lectures, floral displays in The Savill Building, and carriage rides.

Dads have free entry to The Savill Garden on Fathers Day, Sunday 20 June, and there will also be a special Sunday lunch BBQ on The Lawns serving food from 12 noon to 4pm, with a giant marquee for cover just in case. After lunch, treat your Dad to a carriage ride from The Savill Building through The Royal Landscape.

The new Rose Garden within The Savill Garden will open to the public for the first time in mid June. The Rose Garden takes a fresh and contemporary approach to displaying roses and has been designed by Andrew Wilson of Wilson McWilliam Associates.

The Celebration of the Rose 21-27 June, will  mark the opening of this new Garden  with lots of rose related activities to enjoy, including floristry demonstrations from leading NAFAS National Demonstrators, ‘Land Art’ with a display of organic sculpture throughout The Savill Garden and a specially themed menu in the Restaurant. The award winning Alder Valley brass band will be playing traditional songs in the vicinity of the new Rose Garden from 11am-4pm on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 June.

There will be an opera gala evening specially commissioned for the Celebration of the Rose in The Savill Garden on Friday 25 June from 6 pm. Opera Novella  will provide a fun evening of opera with some familiar and some new tunes to enjoy. Come early and have a picnic in the Garden before the performance begins in a marquee on the Lawns. Tickets cost £30 per person and are available from the beginning of April.

Following the success of last year’s art based activities, Art Week will run from 19-25 July. Art Week will include adult workshops and sculptor Daren Greenhow will be working on his metal sculptures in the Garden throughout the week.

The Chapterhouse Theatre will be returning to The Savill Garden providing fantastic open-air theatre from 18-21 August. This year, the company will be performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing; and Pride & Prejudice.

Celebrating the autumn, Pumpkins in the Park will run from 25-29 October. There will be a pumpkin growing competition, a pumpkin recipe competition for all ages, together with a wide range of exotic pumpkins for sale in the ‘Pumpkin Shop’ selling gourds, pumpkins and other pumpkin related items. Also there will be free pumpkin painting for children from 28-31 October in the Savill Building Gallery. Check www.theroyallandscape.co.uk for more information.

Christmas festivities will begin with the popular Christmas Craft Fair 25-28 November. Father Christmas will be visiting The Savill Building again at weekends in December and there will once again be popular children’s activity workshops.
