The arrival of a pumpkin for display weighing over 1,350 lbs – the average weight of a fully grown cow – has set the scene for The Royal Landscape’s pumpkin competition which was judged over the weekend by The Keeper of The Gardens and The Head of The Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park. In the public pumpkin competition, the winner of the adult category was Michael Burr from Bledlow, Buckinghamshire, with a massive pumpkin measuring 207 cms in circumference. The winner in the children’s category was Ella Clark from Englefield Green with a pumpkin 162 cms in circumference. Children from The Royal School in Windsor Great Park also took part in their own Pumpkin Competition, the winning pumpkin being grown by Jack Birchmore (Yr R) and measuring 154 cms in circumference. Head Teacher Carolyn Jones comments: "The children really enjoyed taking part in the competition. It was both fun and educational and the children showed great commitment to tending their pumpkins." Commenting on the overall competition, judge and Head of The Savill Garden, Harvey Stephens says: “The competition has been great fun to judge and we were all impressed by the size of everyone’s pumpkins. It generated a wonderful response from the public and we look forward to running the competition again next year”. Celebrating the autumn, Pumpkins in the Park will run until 31 October. The winning pumpkins will form the centre piece of the autumn display in the Temperate House. This will include over 20 varieties of pumpkin, together with pumpkins grown by children from The Royal School and by Windsor Estate residents. There will also be a wide range of exotic pumpkins and gourds for sale in the ‘Pumpkin Shop’ along with other pumpkin related items. Free pumpkin painting for children will be available from 27-31 October in the Savill Building Gallery. Visitors will also be able to sample the winning dish from the recipe competition of pumpkin and apple soup which will be served in the restaurant. Horse and carriage rides through the autumn colour of the Royal landscape will also be running until 31 October setting off from The Savill Building.
