The Crown Estate's repair of the Obelisk Bridge and Five-Arch Bridge marks the next steps in the ongoing Royal Landscape project at Windsor Great Park

The Obelisk Bridge and the Five-Arch Bridge are being repaired by The Crown Estate as part of the Royal Landscape Project. The work will begin in August and will be completed by October and the bridges will remain open to the public throughout this period.

Philip Everett, Deputy Ranger, Windsor Great Park, comments:

“As part of The Crown Estate’s stewardship of Windsor Great Park, we are undertaking vital repairs to these two distinctive bridges. The work is part of The Royal Landscape Project to conserve and manage this heritage for future generations, and follows on from the restoration of the Leptis Magna Ruins at Virginia Water earlier this year”.

The Royal Landscape lies within Windsor Great Park, and the Obelisk Bridge consists of a single arch between Obelisk Pond and The Savill Garden. It was built in 1833-34 to a design by Wyatville,  a favoured Royal architect.  The Five-Arch Bridge crosses Virginia Water and was also designed by Wyatville. The bridge was completed in 1827.

Graham Sanderson, Assistant Keeper of the Gardens, explains:

“The damage to both bridges has been caused by drainage problems which have undermined the foundations and the emergence of seedlings of trees and shrubs within the bridges’ structure. Following initial investigations, we will be carrying out excavation work and consolidating the surrounding ground. We will also be re-surfacing the bridges, removing the roots of the plants and cleaning and repairing stone masonry”.
