The beautiful flowers last up to ten days depending on the temperature. After flowering, the plant dies and is perpetuated by seedlings and ‘daughter’ bulbs which will grow and flower in five to seven years time. Mark Flanagan comments: “The summer temperatures and spring rainfall have created ideal growing conditions for the giant Himalayan lilies and this is why they are putting on such a splendid show. They like a woodland situation in a moist, humus-rich soil. They have grown for many years in the Dell, which is part of the Hidden Gardens in The Savill Garden. Dependent on the temperature, the flowers should be on show until mid-July”.
